Originally from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Meredith Johnson is the Principal Bassist of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, a position he has held since 2004. Meredith began studying the double bass with Edgar Meyer at Vanderbilt University while pursuing a degree in English Literature. He received his Masters in Music Performance from Boston University where he studied with Todd Seeber and Edwin Barker of the Boston Symphony. He was then a fellow of the New World Symphony before moving to Philadelphia to study privately with Hal Robinson, principal bassist of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Meredith has performed across the United States, Canada, and Europe with numerous festival orchestras, the Symphonies of Charleston and Atlanta, and most recently, the prestigious All Stars Orchestra in a series of television recordings for PBS. He has appeared with many of Manitoba’s premier ensembles including Agassiz Chamber Music, Camerata Nova, The Manitoba Chamber Orchestra and The Winnipeg Chamber Music Society. Meredith has been featured on CBC radio’s The Signal; and along with his duties with the WSO, teaches at Memorial University (NL), the University of Manitoba. He has been a member of the EMF faculty since 2001.
