Originally from Fergus, Ontario, violinist SUSAN MCCALLUM has been a member of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra since 2001. She received her Bachelor of Music with Honors from McGill University, where she studied with Denise Lupien, and later earned her Master of Music under renowned pedagogue Maciej Rakowski at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England. As an orchestral player, McCallum has performed throughout Manitoba and across Canada as a regular member of the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, as well as with the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra, the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, the Brandon Chamber Players, Rainbow Stage and the National Academy Orchestra; and in the United Kingdom with the Lancashire Sinfonietta. An enthusiastic chamber musician, she has performed at numerous concert venues across Canada including the Agassiz Chamber Music Festival, the acclaimed Virtuosi Series at the University of Winnipeg, and with faculty at Memorial University in St. John's, Newfoundland. She has also given recitals and chamber music concerts abroad in the UK and has performed at several international music festivals, including the Summer Academy at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, the Lake District Summer Music Festival in the UK, the Domaine Forget International Festival, and at the Banff Centre for the Arts where she was an artist-in-residence. McCallum has served on the faculties of both the Manitoba Conservatory of Music and the University of Manitoba Preparatory Studies. Susan lives in Winnipeg with her husband, bassist Meredith Johnson, and their three children, Isla, William, and Bea.
