Administrative Intern

Position Description:
The Administrative Intern will primarily have the opportunity to be involved with various financial aspects of the Festival. These include student registration, the student store and the student bank. In addition, there will be opportunities to assist with Festival events including master classes, piano recitals and Festival concerts as scheduling permits. This intern works with the Director of Finance and may work with other key Festival staff as necessary. The Administrative Intern will assist in duties on the campus of Guilford College and at the downtown office location of Eastern Music Festival.

Interns are encouraged to attend a wide variety of concerts, education programs, fundraising events, staff meetings, etc. to gain a thorough understanding of all aspects of the artistic and administrative activities of the festival. All interns will be assigned to projects outside of their position description. Each intern will work 40 hours per week with flexible hours (set by the intern's immediate supervisor) during the week, evenings, and weekends.

Requirements:
The successful candidate should demonstrate a proven attention to detail with a background in mathematics/accounting. Strong communication skills and the ability to work with students ages 14-22 are required. Computer skills needed include Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook. Applicants should have their own means of transportation while at the Festival.  Applicants must be 21 years or older.  The dates for this internship are June 21 through August 2, 2010.

Stipend:

Collaborative Pianist

Duties and Responsibilities:
This pianist will accompany EMF student instrumentalists in an extensive series of master classes and accompany students in the final round of the concerto competition. This position involves learning music quickly and being flexible with rehearsals in order to accommodate students' schedules. The Collaborative Pianist also teaches secondary instrument lessons to EMF students. He/she will be expected to perform at a high level. The Collaborative Pianist will also provide some administrative assistance to the piano faculty and communicate with students regarding times. Other duties may be assigned by key Festival staff.

Requirements:
Applicants should have extensive experience in instrumental accompanying and be outstanding sight-readers and excellent musicians. The successful candidate should be reliable and comfortable working with students ages 14-22.  Applicants must be at least 23 years of age. The dates for this position are June 26 through August 1, 2010.

Compensation:
$1200 base pay + room and board (for non-local residents)

Counselor

Duties and Responsibilities:
A Counselor at the Eastern Music Festival will gain experience by assisting EMF staff in ensuring the physical and mental well-being of students and contributing to a positive learning environment by implementing established policies, addressing student concerns, resolving conflicts, and supervising student activities. Counselors will participate in intensive training in security procedures, safety procedures, health procedures, handling incidents that violate policy, working with students, leadership, and more.

Areas of experience include the following: Assist the Dean of Students in all areas, including coordinating social events, maintaining an orderly environment, providing help and guidance to students, responding to emergencies, working in the counseling office, monitoring and reporting negative student behavior, holding student meetings, providing transportation for students, and more. Counselors will live in the dormitories with the students and will have private rooms. Other duties may be assigned by key Festival staff.

Counselors have the opportunity to be a part of a rich, musical atmosphere where they may attend a wide variety of concerts, masterclasses, rehearsals, etc. Counselors may also make arrangements to study privately with EMF faculty (at the Counselor’s expense).  Each Counselor will have duties 6 days throughout the week with varying work hours (set by the immediate supervisor) during the day, evenings, and weekends.

Requirements:
Counselors must be at least 22 years of age and have a valid driver’s license. Applicants should have strong communication skills, leadership skills, and work well with other people. Applicants should be outgoing and comfortable working with students ages 14-22. The dates for this position are June 21 through August 2, 2010.

EMFkids Camp Counselor

Position Description:
The EMFkids Camp Counselor will gain experience by observing and assisting the Camp Instructors in the following areas:
            - applying teaching techniques for children ages 4-8
            - being involved in creating daily activities
            - aiding in general supervision
            - teaching children how to play various instruments
            - introducing children to basic rhythm and melody

Requirements:
Applicants should be at least 18 years old and have experience with children ranging from ages 4 through 8.  We are most interested in a Counselor who is organized, creative and helpful.  Knowledge of classical music or the performing arts is preferred, but not required.  The dates for this internship are July 5 through July 16, from 8:30am to 12:30pm, Monday through Friday.  Only applicants with local housing or residency will be considered.

Executive Assistant Intern

Position Description:
The Executive Assistant Intern will have the opportunity to gain experience in many areas of arts management.  Specific duties include, but are not limited to assisting with the planning and execution of special events from small concerts to private parties, board correspondence, and general clerical and administrative duties.  The position supports the Executive Director and may be assigned duties by other key Festival staff (such as assistance in concert production). Festival Orchestra Percussion Intern

Position Description:
Festival Orchestra Interns have the unique opportunity to perform with the Eastern Festival Orchestra, the professional faculty orchestra in residence at the Eastern Music Festival, study privately with a faculty member, and learn about the music library of a professional orchestra. The Eastern Festival Orchestra rehearsal and performance schedule includes 5 to 6 services per week (3 rehearsals, 1 dress rehearsal, and 1 or 2 performances). The 2010 season (June 26 – July 31) will include visiting artists Lynn Harrell, Barry Douglas, William Wolfram, and Gil Shaham and conductors Gerard Schwarz and Christopher Seaman.

In addition to rehearsals, performances, and individual practice with the EFO, this intern will further his/her orchestral experience through performances with the two student orchestras and the percussion ensemble as needed. This intern assists in the management and inventory of percussion equipment, including set-up and take-down of equipment for concerts and rehearsals. Additional duties may be assigned by the percussion faculty as well as stage crew duties as assigned by the Technical Director.

Performance Interns are encouraged to attend a wide variety of concerts, education programs, fundraising events, staff meetings, etc. to gain a thorough understanding of all aspects of the artistic and administrative activities of the festival. Fringe Series Intern  (EMF’s non-classical concert series)

Position Description:
The Fringe Series Intern will have the opportunity to learn and apply the skills necessary to produce a summer music festival. This intern will assist in all areas of production including coordinating performance contracts between road managers and artist representatives; coordinating live sound and special instrument (e.g. “backline”) rentals and setup; communicating all production intentions and facilities requirements with performance venues; managing Front of House at concert venues; assisting with travel details and hotel reservations; and assisting with coordinating rehearsal schedules, concert needs, and special requests of artists.  The Fringe Series Intern will assist key Festival staff in all areas on the campus of Guilford College, at the downtown office location of Eastern Music Festival and at various venues in the Greensboro area.

Front of House Intern

Position Description:
The Front of House Manager Intern will have the opportunity to learn and apply the skills necessary to be a House Manager of a summer festival. Areas of experience include, but are not limited to, observing and assisting EMF staff in training and supervising the student usher crew (students ages 14-22); assigning and communicating usher crew schedules; working with Festival staff to seamlessly produce and manage each public event (concerts, recitals, and open rehearsals); communicating with volunteer ushers; overseeing patron seating and safety; and assisting with patron ticketing. The Front of House Intern will also assist the Director of Operations in all areas Festival Operations.

Interns are encouraged to attend a wide variety of concerts, education programs, fundraising events, staff meetings, etc. to gain a thorough understanding of all aspects of the artistic and administrative activities of the festival. Applicants should have excellent leadership and interpersonal skills, experience managing groups of people (specifically high school aged students) and experience in customer service.  Applicants should possess organizational and time management skills, the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and have an outstanding attention to detail.  Strong computer skills needed (includes Microsoft Access, Word and Excel as well as Internet and email proficiency).  Knowledge in classical music is a plus but not required.  Applicants should have their own means of transportation while at the festival and a valid U.S. driver’s license.  Applicants must be 21 years or older.  The dates for this internship are June 21 through August 3, 2010.

Music Library Intern

Position Description:
EMF Music Library Interns have the unique opportunity to learn about the music library of a professional orchestra by assisting the Music Librarian for the Eastern Music Festival. The Music Library interns will assist the Music Librarian for the Eastern Music Festival in the distribution, collection, and inventory of music  for three orchestras as well as chamber music ensembles.  Other areas of experience include the provision of bowings, rehearsal markings, etc. as indicated by the principals and the Music Librarian, and assistance in any end-of-season music library matters. Interns will also assist in other music library duties as assigned by the Music Librarian.

Nurse (part-time)

Position Description:
The Eastern Festival Nurse will oversee the health and well-being of EMF student musicians ages 14-22 and EMF staff/faculty, through tending to students or staff that visit the EMF Nurse’s Office.  He/she will hold office hours Monday through Friday from 1-4pm for 5 weeks (June 28-July 30). Duties include: dispensing meds; giving first aid for minor injuries; communicating specific camper health needs (allergies, special diets) to staff; medical record keeping; liaising with local doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies; and communicating with parents as needed. He/she will work with the EMF School Staff for additional, necessary care from an Urgent Care Center or Hospital. The Eastern Music Festival is located on the Guilford College Campus (within 7 miles from Moses Cone Hospital).

Qualifications and Requirements:

▪ Must be available for 5 weeks (June 28-July 30)

Operations Intern

Position Description:
The Operations Intern will have the opportunity to learn and apply the skills necessary to produce a summer music festival.  This intern will support the activities of the Director of Operations in overseeing day-to-day operation of the Festival.  Specific areas of responsibility include but are not limited to assisting in the creation and dissemination of daily communication between faculty, students, and technical crew; coordination of rental and special instrument needs; assisting with facilities-related issues and housing logistics; and transporting guest artists, as needed.

Piano Technician Intern

Position Description:
The Piano Technician Intern will have the opportunity to gain experience in his/her field through a variety of duties and learning activities.  The intern will work closely with and be coached by EMF’s Head Piano Technician at the EMF facilities and spend approx. 10 hours/week in a renowned piano restoration shop. 

EMF is sponsored by Steinway and Sons and hosts over 30 pianos, including 4 concert grands and 20 smaller grands.  The majority of the intern’s time will be spent at the EMF facilities.  Experience includes practice piano tunings, shadowing the Head Technician for concert tunings, learning to diagnose and correct minor problems associated with new pianos, observing and experiencing collaboration with guest pianists and faculty pianists, and potentially tuning recital pianos.  Duties depend on the experience of the candidate. 

Interns may be asked to assist at various concerts throughout the summer (ushering, etc.) and assist in some logistical aspects of the piano program, including student transportation.  Interns are encouraged to attend a wide variety of Eastern Music Festival concerts, education programs, staff meetings, etc. to gain a thorough understanding of all aspects of the artistic and administrative activities of the festival. 

The time spent with John Foy Piano Restorations, Inc. will include observation of structural rebuilding procedures, along with hands-on training in grand piano action regulation and voicing.  Touchweight theory and practice will be discussed, and the student will have the opportunity to observe the rebalancing of a grand action and keyboard.  Aural tuning skills will be reviewed and the student will be allowed to tune one or more pianos with detailed critique from John Foy.  Additional topics that will be discussed will include:  business practices for the home-service market, safety and health issues, and assessing pianos for rebuilding.

All interns will be assigned to projects outside of their position description. Each intern will work 40 hours/week with flexible hours (set by the intern’s immediate supervisor) during the week, evenings, and weekends.

Requirements:
The successful candidate must hold a certificate in piano tuning and be interested in or have experience in piano restoration.  Applicants should be out-going, personable, and enthusiastic. The dates for this internship are June 23 through August 1, 2010.

Public Relations/ Marketing Intern

Position Description:
The public relations and marketing intern will apply basic public relations techniques and communication skills to promote the Eastern Music Festival during its summer season. The PR/Marketing Intern will be involved in the preparation of press releases, the coordination of media coverage for the festival’s events, interaction with publicity representatives, public service announcements, internet coverage, mass email communication, media calls, print advertising, the distribution of collateral materials, and more. The PR/Marketing Intern will assist in duties on the campus at Guilford College and at the downtown office location of Eastern Music Festival.

Requirements:
Applicants must have excellent writing, communication, project management, leadership, and computer skills in MS Office products, including MS Publisher.  Design skills a plus. The successful intern should be highly motivated and possess a professional demeanor. He/she must be a self-starter who can take initiative to contact media and positively promote EMF.  Experience in PR, creative marketing, and a knowledge of classical music or the performing arts are preferred. Run-Out Coordinator

Position Description:
The Run-Out Coordinator Intern will have the opportunity to assist in managing a series of informal community concerts throughout the Festival and coordinate groups to play for specific donor events. In addition, this intern will assist in the day-to-day operations of the student program.  Areas of experience include, but are not limited to choosing and setting up performance venues throughout the Greensboro area; accurately and professionally communicating with contacts at each venue; coordinating with faculty chamber coaches concerning performance groups; communicating details with student groups; and executing all aspects of the run-out, including transportation, meals, marketing, and introductions of the student group. The Run-Out Coordinator Intern will also assist the Admissions Director and Director of Educational Programs in all areas of student relations such as coordination of student events and educational programs for young children and adults, data entry and clerical duties, and managing student work study assignments.

Applicants should have excellent leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills and experience managing groups of people (specifically high school aged students).  Applicants should possess organizational and time management skills, the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and have an outstanding attention to detail.  Strong computer skills needed (includes Microsoft Access, Word and Excel as well as Internet and email proficiency).  Knowledge in classical music is essential.  Applicants should have their own means of transportation while at the festival and a valid U.S. driver’s license.  Applicants must be 21 years or older.  The dates for this internship are June 21 through August 2, 2010.

Stage Management Intern

Position Description:
The stage management intern will have the opportunity to gain experience in the stage management of a professional concert series. This intern will assist the Stage Manager in all areas of festival production, including all local and out-of-town concerts, music rehearsals, and master-classes. This intern will also assist in the handling and transportation of production materials including percussion equipment. Other responsibilities include all backstage duties as directed by the Stage Manager, such as set-up and stage changes for concerts and recitals.

Interns are encouraged to attend a wide variety of concerts, education programs, fundraising events, staff meetings, etc. to gain a thorough understanding of all aspects of the artistic and administrative activities of the festival. All interns will be assigned to projects outside of their position description. Part-time and full-time positions available.  Each full-time intern will work 40 hours/week with flexible hours (set by the intern’s immediate supervisor) during the week, evenings, and weekends.

Requirements:
Applicants must be able to work under tight deadlines and be able to take directions from many people. This job will require lifting heavy equipment and may require driving large cargo vehicles (16 foot truck and/or cargo van). Previous stage managing experience is desirable. Applicants should have their own means of transportation while at the festival and a valid U.S. driver’s license. The dates for this internship are June 21 through August 2, 2010.

$400 for part-time interns, $800 + room and board for full-time interns
