Musicologist Dr. Greg Carroll and EMF special guests explore the history and backstory behind the evening’s composers and repertoire in a casual, conversational atmosphere during EMF’s summer season (Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays). Whether you are nurturing your love of classical music or a veteran of EMF performances, you’ll be delighted and enlightened by these pre-concert talks. FREE and open to the public.

Dr. Greg Carroll

Dr. Greg Carroll is Professor Emeritus in the UNCG School of Music, where he taught music theory, composition, history, and literature from 1981-2020. He graduated BA in music at St. John’s University (MN), and MM and PhD in Composition/Theory at the University of Iowa.  Prior to coming to UNCG, he taught at the University of Iowa and Indiana State. He was the first winner of the Outstanding Teacher Award in the School of Music in 1995, and after his music appreciation course Musicopolis won international honors in 2010, UNCG created a new Excellence in Online Education Award with Dr. Carroll as its first recipient. He also lectures for the Greensboro Symphony and the UNCG Emeritus Society.

Dr. Timothy H. Lindeman is Professor of Music Emeritus at Guilford College in Greensboro, NC, where he taught for more than 30 years. He has reviewed performances of classical music in NC for Triad Style, the News and Record, and for the on-line journal Cultural Voice of North Carolina. Maestro Peter Perret

Maestro Peter Perret is the conductor emeritus of the Winston-Salem Symphony, having served as Music Director from 1978 to 2004. Previously, Perret served the Buffalo Philharmonic as Exxon/Arts Endowment Conductor for three years and was principal conductor of the Capetown Symphony (South Africa). He received advanced music degrees from the Royal Conservatory of Brussels and the Academia Chigiana in Siena. Currently, Perret leads frequent workshops on his co-authored book, A Well-Tempered Mind: Using Music to Help Children Listen and Learn.
