LUCIANO CARNÉIRO is professor of double bass at the Universidade Federal da Paraíba (Brazil). He received his Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Iowa and his Master of Music from Yale University, where he studied with double bass virtuoso Gary Karr. Carnéiro received his Bachelor of Music from the New England Conservatory of Music and has also attended the Franz Liszt Academy at Budapest and the University of Rio de Janeiro. His major teachers were Diana Gannett, Gary Karr, William Rhein, Zoltan Tibay and Bela Wurtzler. He has been principal bass of the Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo, Orquestra Sinfônica do Rio Grande do Norte and the Eastern Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as the double bass section of the Virginia Symphony and the Hartford Symphony Orchestra. Carnéiro has been an EMF faculty member since 1989. He is the recipient of the 1996-97 Henry and Parker Pelzer Award for strings. He has appeared as soloist with many major orchestras in South America and presented numerous performances in his native Brazil and in the U.S.
