Celebrating 61 Years of Musical Excellence

June 25 – July 30, 2022

Timothy Ren is a second-year undergraduate student at the University of Chicago, where he majors in Fundamentals: Issues and Texts. He attended the Eastman School of Music during the 2018-2019 school year as a visiting student, where he studied with Neil Varon and Rachel Lauber, in addition to learning from guest conductors Mark Gibson, Kirk Trevor, and David Zinman. During his time at Eastman, he founded the First-Year Chamber Orchestra, conducted two full-length public concerts, served as a Choral Scholar in Christ Church Schola Cantorum, sat in on numerous orchestral repertoire classes, and continued his piano studies with Harriet Zimmerman.

Ren began the serious study of conducting in ninth grade and spent two enriching summers at the Curtis Institute’s Young Artist Summer Program as a student conductor. To further his knowledge about string instruments, he studies bowing and string techniques with Janis Sakai, a former co-concertmaster of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. Since 2017, he has been a student of Mark Russell Smith, with whom he shares a penchant for Austro-German repertoire.

In addition to his passion for conducting, Ren reads eclectically and enjoys cross-country running.
