Ziwei Ma begain studying piano at the age of five. At the Central Conservatory of Music Pre-College in Beijing, she won a best conductor award and continued her studies there with conducting teacher Xiaotang Xia. While she was at the Central Conservatory, she served as assistant conductor with the China Youth Symphony Orchestra, leading several performances with the ensemble. She also conducted the CYSO in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte with singers from the China National Opera House. As a pianist, she rehearsed Richard Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos with the China Philhardmonic and was also a répétiteur with the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing.
In 2018, Ma began her conducting studies at The Hartt School with the former music director of the Hartford Symphony, Edward Cumming, who now serves as Director of Orchestral Studies at Hartt. In Hartford, she has performed with the Foot in the Door Contemporary Ensemble, Four Corners Ensemble (at the Polish Consulate General in New York City), and the Hartt Orchestra. Ma received her Masters of Music in Instrumental Conducting from the Hartt School in May 2020 and is now in pursuit of a Doctor of Musical Arts at Hartt.
